Letter from Mike Jackson

Today, we scored a tremendous victory for our union, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, and our First Amendment rights to free speech. As you know, our Union sued the City of Woodhaven last week after city police ordered the removal of a lawful banner that informs residents about a labor dispute between our Union and LA Fitness. MRCC displayed a banner that let residents know contractors hired by LA Fitness to build its new facility in Woodhaven were not paid area wages and benefits. We simply wanted to be sure that our right to display a banner and express our view, as protected under the U.S. Constitution, is not trampled upon. Today, the City of Woodhaven conceded that our Union has the right to lawfully display a banner in front of LA Fitness. Our banner will go back up in Woodhaven and our fight for fair wages and the middle class can continue in Woodhaven and beyond. We could not have won this important victory without the overwhelming show of support from you. I cannot say enough how proud I am of each and every one of you who stood up for our brothers and sisters, signing up to volunteer your time to distribute leaflets and attend a Woodhaven City Council meeting to express our constitutionally protected concerns and point of view. Because of this victory, we will not – I repeat, we WILL NOT – need to canvass the City of Woodhaven on Thursday or attend the City Council meeting next week as we had planned. This ruling is a victory for Michigan’s working men and women who deserve fair wages for a hard day’s work. It confirms our view that we have the right to lawfully display banners, which is one of many legal ways to let people know when workers aren’t fairly paid. Again, I want to thank all of you who voluntarily signed up – many of you within hours of our call for volunteers – to make our voice heard. As your Executive Secretary-Treasurer, I am extremely proud of the show of strength all of you showed when our rights and our future was on the line. Thank you for all that you do! Mike Jackson Executive Secretary-Treasurer Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights
